I think this is the biggest potato harvest to date at the Little Red Hen garden! These will go to Diamond Diners next week at St. Aidan's - for our senior guests to take home with them. They've done so well that I think I'll plant another batch very soon...

News from one of our parish Good News Gardens - from the Partridge/Paul household - there are tomato plants going strong, cilantro that has been dug up by varmints but is replanted, also basil, mint, parsley, sage, and thyme, and a struggling pepper plant.
From the Little Red Hen garden the big news is many many potatoes and also flowers... Photos for your Sunday... On a walk this week, I noticed this sweet little presentation that someone put together outside of their house. It made me smile. Which we need in these times.....So I wanted to share it, on a cool and a little bit rainy SF Saturday.
I know that I posted a photo of tomatoes some time ago, but I just had to do it again, because these beauties are from the Little Red Hen garden in Diamond Heights, which is way foggier than my home where the others were grown. I'm so amazed that they are doing so well. They are bringing me joy during this wild ride of a week....
We had a lovely harvest of greens today - lettuce, arugula, chard, mint, chives, lemon verbena - lots for the Free Farm Stand in the Mission. Hopefully tomatoes are coming - many nice green ones are there, but not ripe yet. Still hoping, as I said last time....
We have lots of greens going at the Little Red Hen garden - tomatoes are not ripening yet, but here's hoping! And the squashes are trying hard. We're enjoying the clearer air in SF and even some blue sky. A very nice change....
St. Aidan’s has joined the Good News Gardens movement of the Episcopal Church - you can check it out here: episcopalchurch.org/good-news-gardens. This is an initiative that was designed for the time of COVID, intended to help with food insecurity in our neighborhoods, and to make real the idea that we all can do something to support others in this time. A group of us are going to start by planting greens that we can donate to the Food Pantry and Diamond Diner. We’re focusing on lettuce, chard, arugula, spinach. These veggies grow well in the fall, even in foggy San Francisco. We’ll compare notes and cheer each other on - please join us!.
For some reason, I decided to try to grow tomatoes in San Francisco during our COVID time. Usually tomatoes are an exercise in futility in our foggy climate - but I have gotten a first harvest! A little good news in a sea of ---- well, not so good news. Happy Labor Day weekend to everyone...
My friend Lisa shared with me this past week the memorial she is tending in her yard for those lost to COVID-19 in San Francisco. She adds red stones for each person who dies, (thus expanding the heart). She also adds flowers when she waters on Sundays. Lisa is one of those people who is practical, caring, and deeply intentional. I so admire her memorial practice and I wanted to share it, particularly after the long hard week we've had with more police violence and much smoke-filled air. I hope Lisa's love for our community brings us all a little hope this weekend.
We had a small but mighty harvest from the Little Red Hen garden today - a mix of lovely colors and late summer bounty. This harvest went to the Free Farm Stand in the mission - with love....
